Here's our match report from the defeat to Molesey.

http://www.eefconline.co.uk/LCN131.html

They had a flying start and we were never able to pull it back. We had a good try though and Kyle Hough should have had the chance for a hat trick of penalties but somehow only was given one of them by some very weak officiating. Some would say he bottled it; I couldn't possibly comment!

Well apart from in the match report :)

Excellent report E&E Rich, but like the other threads this weekend, when a team lose why do they blame the officials ?   If your team scored more and won you wouldn't be questioning the referee. Blame your team and not officials for losing and certainly don't rely on penalties to get your team out of trouble !  How do you know all of them would have been scored ?

So were Molesey lucky then ?

Tad biased maybe but do understand they are your team and its natural one tends to favour them, it happens all the time, its not just you E&E. ;)

Generally speaking though, I'd be surprised if, even in the old days, when there were paying customers coming through the gate / whole in the fence, the players would have been expected to pay.

Of course there are subs to pay where that's not the case - I've been paying £100+ per season for my son to play since he was 9 years old. Otherwise how are the refs going to be paid, kits purchased etc. etc.?

(Maybe I'm missing a point here....)

Yes, you were expected to pay, even with money coming in at the gate.  The argument was that It paid your insurance, which the club could include you on as non contracted players. Feel free to be surprised (Early to mid 80's , so I guess that's the old days!)

Money well spent Rother.Yes you have hit the nail on the head, how are the Refs going to be paid? They are the biggest drain on resources at Non League Level, add in the customary Free Drink,Sandwiches, etc,by my reckoning, minimum £140 per game.Still at least they contribute to the nation as a WHOLE,by paying 20 per cent to HMRC.Therefore helping this Country out of the HOLE that it is in.

But at what point do officials ( be they good, bad, or indifferent) decide it isn't worth their while? A drain on resources, I'm sure, but we wouldn't have a game without them.

Always makes me chuckle when someone claims their team were denied X goals by Y reasons. In reality BG had either "penalty" been given, whether scored or not the pattern of play would have changed and no-one can then say whether that would lead to more or less chances.

Trust you noticed that us contributors from Windsor didn't blame the officials.

Maybe not in your reports Rother but your bench and fans were giving him a lot of stick on the day ;)

Very true Green Fingers me too, but either penalty which is only the perception of E&E and of course the E&E players whereby other onlookers would agree that the appeals were not penalties....so why go on and say 'cos the referee didn't give a penalty E&E lost the game because of the referee decision?

In plain English, had E&E scored more goals than Molesey they would have won, so look at it that way....perhaps ?

Don't blame the ref blame the players for E&E losing remember E&E conceded 3 goals and from reading E&E report Molesey missed a sitter ?  So were Molesey unlucky not to win 4-1 ???

All If's and maybe's Green Fingers    ;)

Don't get me wrong, he was poor, but (as I said in my observations) the most ridiculous one was against Camberley.

PS Did you get called over by one of the officials pre-game to act as 4th official or some such?

I get to watch a lot of Epsom games but when I don't, I go to lots of other places and try and look at these things neutrally. I also did some refereeing many years ago on a Sunday. It is a tough job.

However, over the years you get an idea of whether it is the right or wrong decision by the reaction of the players nearby. With the foul you could see the players turn to look at him. Everyone could see that he had moved his whistle to his lips and then looked over at the Assistant who was a long way away and rightly not getting involved with a decision where the ref was nearer. The angle of the foul would have made it very difficult for the Assistant to see anyway.

For the handball, the guy had two hands in the air above his head. It was one of those where he maybe didn't intend to handball it but they still gained an advantage from it which in my book means handball, even if there was no card required for any intent to prevent a goal. I repeat, both his hands were above his head in the box.

I fully take on board that the game may have taken a different course had the first penalty been awarded and scored which is my report wonders if we might just have got something out of it, rather than saying we definitely would have.

I also said that Molesey were deserving of the win. On another day it might have been different but a draw would then have been harsh on them.

Finally, I rarely criticise officials. On the website we have a full set of club reports going back to 2000. Check it out. You'll have to go a fair way back to find criticism, and when you do it will just as likely have been for a match where we won. I don't do all this "we lost, blame the ref" routine. I leave that to Rother :)
