Does anyone know why the 1989 match was switched from Merstham to Hornchurch?

I'm guessing here, Dagger, but as someone who lives near and knows the Merstham ground, I reckon that in 1989, it may have been considered a better option to use a larger ground.  Admittedly, Merstham have done wonders to their ground in recent seasons.

Big JR

In 1989 we were hardly Real Madrid

Yes, but probably having a better standard than Merstham did at that time.

Pastures and grazing rights and all that !!  :D

The match was switched to Hornchurch at a late stage, as the pitch at Merstham had developed some large cracks in the playing surface, due to a heat wave.

The match programme was actually produced by Merstham, who had no choice other than to switch the match.

Thanks to Jago for supplying this information.
