Spelthorne Sports?

Smudge

Recommended Posts

What is their secret? Unbeaten in 37 League games,in fact the last side to beat them was everyones favourite Club South Kilburn at the end of the 12/13 season.Could it be fitness I ask?Are they just off of everyones radar as the Team to beat,as they are the 'New Kids on the block? Maybe even it is that they have no posters on here, have you any views on why they have been so successful, with very little praise from anyone.

All I can say from what I know smudge the club as a whole breathes 'football' from under 8's all the way through to firsts . Steve flattman got the ball rolling with getting into ccl 1 then credit to Johnno and Gary to what they've assembled down there are strong squad of about 30 dedicated lads , no egos , who reffrain from your usual 'disco powder' nights out . Mix the excellent coaching skills , lads down there muck in for club all 'Together' building work , sports days for youth sponsor shop raising . Ryman bound for sure

I saw them in the Cup Final at Stag Meadow last season and thought they were pretty dour with very little pace anywhere on the pitch.

I said at the time I thought they'd struggle in the Prem.

I then saw them beat Windsor early on this season and again was not impressed. On both occasions they looked a functional but uninspiring team to watch.

Whatever they are doing to gain the edge they so clearly have (fitness, healthy habits etc.) it's obviously working and fair play to them.

There is no doubt that with their impressive winning record they are not being ignored Smudge altho' very little is writing about them.

I saw them last season on a couple of occasions and they were definitely the 'stand-out' team and deserved winners of CCL Div. 1

They have comradery, a togetherness as mates playing together, good organisation, work hard as a unit, difficult to beat and have good players with goalscorers and pace on the flanks.

That was last season.  I have been on holiday so yet been to see a game this season, so have not watched them but will do sooner rather than later.

Now I don't think they would have changed that much from last season 'cos if it ain't broken don't fix it !

With respect, they can be classified as another Hanworth Villa primarily a Sunday team, then became a Saturday team working up the ranks with gradual progression, and now having floodlights, its a green light to even go further, so who knows what awaits their future.

With respect to all CCL teams/clubs, there are more difficult tests that lie ahead for Spelthorne, as they yet have to play a team in the top 6 of the CCL Prem. starting this Saturday at Camberley after which, we will know more about their standing within the CCL Premier.

Very interesting tho'

Winning is a very good habit to get into,i've said it before the teams at the top of this league are not much different to the teams in the lower reaches,as is often proved when bottom beats top,the secret i believe is confidence that is installed by the manager and his team,Millers at Cove will be loving his role at the moment while Paul at Farnham will be wondering where to turn next, the teams are a reflection of the manager (at any level not just ccl)and a happy manager is confident and gets respect from everyone,he can then insist on players behaving in a certain way,its got nothing to do with money by the way.

Have to agree Paul, the team that impressed me most last season in the Premier were Cove,I did tell Kroons at Leatherhead, they were my tip for the Title this year,he went for Westfield.Managers are very important, you only have to look at the Premier Teams who changed Managers this year, hardly pulling up trees are they.

Saw Spelly last week in the Vase replay and they looked decent. Usual faces and the (very astute) addition of Stuart Norman in goal. Expected them to do well, but it's a long old season and no prizes given out yet. They do remind me of South Park though. Settled team, play as a team, appear tight knit and we all know what happened to South Park....

To be fair like someone said they've yet to at the top 6 and I've heard a few rumours that the management could be getting prized away to Hampton and Richmond so let's see :)

Redrup, it was me me who mentioned about having to play current top 6 sides thereafter we can see where Spelthorne stand....and I think they will be thereabouts.

IF rumours are true Redrup, Johnson played for Hampton so will he go back as a player ? I doubt it after his time at Spelthorne albeit still playing but Dowson is looking to strengthen his defence. Will Johnson and his management team go to Hampton as what ? running Hampton reserves ?  I think not 'cos they are in a good position at Spelthorne and am sure that they would want to see thru' what they are currently achieving... but I could be wrong !!! ;)

Well the unbeaten run of Spellthorne continues after a 0-0 draw with Camberley. Both teams were in a game they did not want to lose and most of the play was in the middle of the park, with both teams competing hard for every ball. Despite being a physical game it was played in good spirit and not much need for the ref to be busy with his whistle. The ref incidentally had a good game I thought, as did the two officials on the lines. It was not the prettiest of games from a spectators point of view, with neither side letting the other settle on the ball, and good passages of play were limited. Camberley had their chances, as did Spellthorne however some outstanding goalkeeping at both ends kept honours even.

As I said (in bold) above, with respect to other clubs, Camberley were Spelthorne's first big test and drew, credit that they still remain unbeaten tho', It won't be plain sailing for them,'cos experience tells us that on their day any club from the bottom can beat the top teams.in the CCL.    Surprises ahead maybe ?

Not much is being said about Ashford (Mx) either Smudge ? But in fairness they should be near the top being relegated from the league / level above CCL Premier.

Its early doors but is there any indication already which way the teams are going ?  Having said that, it only needs a run of wins and league will change immensely.

So my first game this season is Tuesday to watch Windsor v RPV then I'll have a look at Spelthorne who play at Colliers Wood on Wednesday.

Could be an interesting season !
