Report from our first reserve team fixture back in the SSML

Welwyn GC Res 1, St Margaretsbury Res 4

A DEPLETED WGC reserve side played their first fixture in the newly constituted SSML Reserve Division South & East and were soundly beaten by a strong St Margaretsbury side.

Reserve boss Neil Draper was missing a trio of regulars and the Citizens' second string soon got a taste of what is expected to be a strong division this season as they went a goal down within two minutes of the start, the visitors' Scully heading a picture goal.

In seven minutes it was 2-0 when Clay fired in a low shot for St Margaretsbury, but from that point, WGC Res forced their way back into the game, reducing the leeway on 20 minutes.

A well-worked short corner routine saw 16-year-old Reggie Ross cross into the area, Nathan Studholme touched it off and Yasin Boodhoo forced it over the line.

It was an even contest until first-half stoppage time, when teenage defender Harry Budge was caught in possession in his own area and the visitors netted an easy third.

St Margaretsbury Res sealed the result with a fourth, again in added time at the end of the game.

WGC Res: Hester, Taylor, Budge, Nymm, Bowden, Awad (Cockram 72), Boodhoo, Kiddie (Ortega Morales 65), Ross, Coxall (McArdle 83), Studholme.

4 shots? On target maybe, but created lots of chances, 4 or 5 long range efforts, final passes etc that weren't far off.

Like I said though, one of their goals was a pen that never was, the lad stood on the ball, and the other our gk threw in from a corner. Tbh, our gk made 2 or 3 top drawer saves 1st half that kept us in it. Codicote good side will cause sides a lot of problems.

My version and they version not far off.

Lots of goals. Could've gone either way. Ref awful.

What do you think? Should I? Ooh, go on then....

CRAWLEY GREEN 5-3 CODICOTE

Admission £5.00 2x filled rolls £2.00 Coffee £1.25

The evening didn't get off to a very good start with all the programmes having been hoovered up by the Codicote masses, the barbecue shelter having been filled in, a change in bar personnel, Vicky's tea and coffee making skills having been usurped by another of those rip-off machines and CG falling behind.

Never mind, the second half was better as someone kindly abandoned their programme in the clubhouse and Crawley Green suddenly found their mojo to level up, take the lead, and eventaually put themselves out of sight. A soft penalty gave the visitors a little crumb of comfort , but another nice boost to my goals-per-game ratio.

So what engineered this turnaround? The tea? The news that I'd snaffled a programme? Or (whisper it quietly) the clubhouse side lino - a certain HyperAngus from Baldockshire? We may never know - well not until next Tuesday when Baldock visit Sharpenhoe Road :)

Another game where we didn't take our chances. Should have been 2/3-0 up at least after the first half, but there keeper and poor finishing prevented this.

Second half we had a couple of very good opportunities early on to take the game away from Crawley, but again didn't take them.

Crawley to be fair then got on top of us and took all there meaningful chances.

The referee was very poor. 2 maybe 3 of crawleys goals come from a poor refereeing decision against us.

I wouldn't say we were a direct team though, thought we played a lot of good football last night. Went direct when we had to or if the pass was in
