Ash Trees 3 Comrades 1

A handy win and some Cup money earned against a badly disciplined Berkhamsted team, who had two players and their manager sent off.

While we had the upper hand, it was ebb and flow until Bitz latched onto a midfield splitting pass by Russ and powered it home in the 17th. Berkhamsted kept plugging away, but we mopped everything up and looked comfy (comfy enough to have been more than one up) until a deflected 32nd minute shot by Josh Chamberlain deflected off Rob Curtis and in. After that, we lost our way a bit for the next half hour or so.

Berkhamsted played some decent football, and had us looking edgy for a while, but spolit it with their indiscipline. Having done a "Man United" (sorry, Phil!) and had four of five surrounding the ref whenever they didn't like a decision, they went down to ten men in the 49th when Jordon Frederick slapped / pushed one of our lads in the face. Four minutes later, their manager was sent from the dugout after protracted complaints when Tyler (who commanded his goal superbly throughout) came out of his area and gave away a free kick with a sliding tackle and was given a yellow.

For a while, it was hard to tell which team had ten men and which had eleven, but we regained the lead after a trip in the box on Bitz and he became our new top scorer from the spot. Bitz deserved a hat-trick for his enthusiasm, but his 84th minute shot, well saved by Carl Tasker, saw the rebound slotted home by Dan Fleming. It should be pointed out that both keepers had previously made an exceptional reflex save apiece to keep the score down. There was still time for Berkhamsted's Ed Canham to get sent off (his second yellow?) for another indiscretion. It has to be said, though, one of our lads avoided a clear yellow for a blatant shirt pull near the end.

Nice to see a settled Ashford side enjoying their football and trusting each other. The same starting line-up for the fifth consecutive game. Daventry Town will be a real test of the lads' mettle in the next round. In the meantime, back to focussing on getting some more points in the bag.

Not sure we lost our way today at all, we are not always going to be able to play the style of football we are starting to associate ourselves with, we had to mix it up a bit today and I think our discipline was excellent seeing as they tried to kick us off the park. Job well done lads your a credit to the club.

A decent performance but what was most pleasing was the way we stayed out of all the Argie bargie and concentrated on our own game. We did get a lot of decisions in the first half but Berkhamsted committed a lot of fouls! The ref might have got a couple wrong but there were some late tackles, shirt pulling etc and he should be given credit for picking up on them.

Quite frankly Berkamsteds behaviour on the pitch and in their dug out was quite disgraceful. I think it stemmed from frustration that we were out playing them, they tried the ruff stuff but the ref was wise to it and we didn't react.

Our lads put another good shift in but we know we can play better.

Glad to see Dan the man get on the scoresheet, well deserved for his efforts and well taken too. Bitz was outstanding and was my M of M.

Well done lads!

I know Daventry won't fancy coming to us. Even though they will be favourites, we are a bit of a bogey side for them.

COYT!!!

Another little point I would like to make is hearing a few moans and groans from the stand when our lads try to play quick from free kicks and it doesn't come off. We need to understand that occasionally it doesn't come off and not get on the players backs for trying the harder option. One things for sure I much prefer that style than loading the box on every free kick and lumping it in there!!

Enjoying this style!!!

How our opponents saw it - from the Local Press:

Berkhamsted manager Mick Vipond was left bemoaning a series of controversial refereeing decisions as he saw his side knocked out of the FA Cup at Ashford Town.

The Comrades went down 3-1 to their Middlesex opponents, but ended the game with nine men– as well as seeing Vipond himself sent to the stands.

Vipond was left bemused by a number of the decisions, and says it was one of the worst refereeing displays he has ever witnessed.

“It was absolutely appalling,” said Vipond. “We’ve all had bad refereeing decisions and that’s part and parcel of football, but what we got on Saturday was just terrible.”

Jordan Frederick was sent off for retaliation after having the ball kicked at him, while Ashford keeper Tyler Tobin was lucky to stay on the pitch after taking out BJ Christie who was through on goal.

Vipond was dismissed for foul language, but insists he was the victim of mistaken identity, while Ashford received a hotly-disputed penalty themselves.

Ed Canham was also given his marching orders late on to wrap up a miserable afternoon for the Comrades.

“Their penalty was one of the worst penalty decisions I have ever seen,” said Vipond. “Then their keeper took out BJ (Christie) and somehow just got a yellow.

“The referee came over and asked me to leave the pitch for saying something, but I had said absolutely nothing.

“I am going to wait for the referee’s report and then appeal, because it is an appalling decision.

“Everyone makes mistakes, managers as well, but when it is as one sided as that, it is just terrible.

“The repercussions are that we are out of the FA Cup, losing out on £1,500, and we now have two players suspended.”

Berko fielded the side that beat had beaten Tring in midweek but lost their 100 per cent record for the season and went out of the competition.

Ashford took the lead in the 18th minute when Mark Bidmead pounced on a defensive error and rounded Carl Tasker to open the scoring.

But Berko responded well and levelled the scores when a Courtney Massay cross was deflected into his own net at the near post by Rob Curtis.

Tasker then kept out a shot that was destined for the top corner and the sides went into the interval level.

The second half was full of incident and controversial refereeing.

Four minutes into the half, the match officials missed an incident but caught JFrederick retaliating and he was shown a red card for pushing an Ashford player.

The 10 men played well for a 20-minute period, however, with Canham flicking on a Josh Chamberlain throw-in and hitting the post.

There was further controversy when Ashford goalkeeper Tobin raced out of his area and brought down BJ Christie with two feet but escaped with a yellow instead of a red card.

Ashford took the lead with a penalty by Bidmead – awarded after James Baldry won the ball in a tackle – and with just six minutes to go, Bidmead setup Dan Fleming to make it 3-1 and kill off any hope of Berko getting a replay.

1, Berkamsted player pushed a player in the face. Red!

2, Berkhamsted player elbows goalkeeper in the face.

Red!

3, Managers calls linesman "a F**king discrace"

Red!

The Berks No 10 should have walked as well after being booked on his fourth late challenge and then calling the linesman a "F**king arsehole" when the Lino was sorting a substitution!

The signs of ill discipline were seen early in the game, when Berkhamsted no 9 thought he was fouled. When nothing was given he retaliated by taking out one of ours, may have been Tommy Brunton. From then on every decision was contested by players surrounding the referee, in my opinion it was a reflection of the way the Berkhamsted bench and management team acted.

As for Tyler taking out their forward, from where I was, he played the ball first.

Very much sour grapes, they were an absolute disgrace for most of the match both physical and verbal...

The only thing the referee got wrong really was not showing one of our players a yellow for pulling an opponent back on the shoulder and again the time played was baffling

We started the first half at 4 minutes past of my watch and went in for half time just before 15:55 a 50 minute half with one stoppage...

I them timed the play we had in the opening 10 minutes of the second half (which started at 11 mins past 4) with the fracas of their first sending off and Tyler's challenge... We played 2 minutes out of 10 minutes and with other stoppages, subs made etc we should have played on until almost 17:10 but he only added 4 minutes :o

I get the impression that with our opponents down to 9 men minus the manager an losing 3-1 that he had just had enough....

Anyway well done a very well deserved win and just 13 games away from the Wembley Arch now ;)
