CANVEY ISLAND  1  HORNCHURCH  1

Hornchurch scored a last second equaliser, but still dropped out of the play-off places, on a day when yellow and red cards were flashed with monotonous regularity.

On a sunny day, but with a strong downfield wind, George Purcell raced clear in the second minute, only to be pulled back by a somewhat controversial offside flag.

Play was confined to midfield, and apart from a corner, and a John Sands shot which sailed high over the bar, Canvey could make little impression on the Hornchurch defence.

Stefan Payne won a corner after good work by Tambeson Eyong, and Danny Phillips played the corner low to Payne, whose shot dropped over the bar.

Purcell then fired wide after a good build up involving Frankie Curley, Eyong and Payne.

Hornchurch went close when they were awarded a free kick after Nick Humphrey had conceded the foul. Joey May floated the ball across goal and Rickie Hayles, at the far post, headed over.

Stefan Payne was booked, perhaps harshly, for a mistimed tackle on Nick Humphrey in midfield.

At the other end a free kick by Joe Carter out of the right eluded everyone and only a last second dive by Inigo Echepare kept the ball out of the net.

Canvey took the lead when a low cross from the left was deflected out for a corner, which was only partially cleared as far as ROB BARTLEY who immediately volleyed the ball hard into the net.

On 33 minutes Canvey players over-reacted en masse when Hornchurch were awarded a free kick close to the halfway line. The eventual result, after much consultation between referee and both linesmen, was red cards for Frankie Curley and Jason Hallett.

Hornchurch were fortunate when an Echepare miskick landed at the feet of Ashley Dumas, whose prompt return towards the empty goalmouth drifted over the bar.

Then came an incident which infuriated the away following. Purcell was sent clear with an excellent pass over the head of Rob Bartley, who pulled the ball down with his hand. The referee awarded a free kick, and Bartley can consider himself fortunate that he received a yellow card for what appeared to be denial of a goal scoring opportunity. Joey May took the free kick, and both Elliot Styles and Payne had shots charged down before the ball went out of play.

With passions still high from the incident, a clash close to the corner flag shortly afterwards ended with a straight red for Joe Carter and a second yellow for Stefan Payne.

It was nine-a-side in the second half, which began cautiously, and apart from a Canvey corner there was little in the way of scoring opportunities, until Martin Tuohy replaced Danny Phillips on 60 minutes.

Almost immediately Elliot Styles missed a long clearance out of defence to give Jay Curran a clear run at goal, but he hit his shot high over the bar, in the direction of the nearby river Thames.

Tuohy then provided an excellent pass to Purcell, whose hard shot cannoned back off a defender.

Tuohy was again in action when he almost scored with a first time shot from a Phil Starkey cross, the ball being touched out by Josh Vickers for a corner.

Leigh Bremner and Chris Bourne came on for Eyong and Starkey, and Canvey were forced to defend in depth, whilst always looking dangerous when they could get the ball out of defence.

A Dave Rainford free kick found Bremner, whose header was saved by Vickers, and

Bremner then sent over a good pass to Purcell, whose shot was well saved by Vickers, whilst Bartley dived full length to head a goal bound Purcell shot away to safety.

Martin Tuohy finished off a good move when he fired the ball home but celebrations were but short by an offside flag.

In a rare Canvey sortie up field, Hayles conceded a corner, which Calum Webb sent over into the waiting hands of Echepare.

Joey May went close with a hard shot which crashed into the side netting following a Hayles throw, and in the sixth minute of stoppage time a Purcell shot was handled, up went the flag, to signal a penalty, but CHRIS BOURNE followed up to crash the ball into the net. Then followed a worrying sixty seconds before the referee correctly awarded the goal. There was just time to book Ashley Dumas for protesting, and then came the final whistle.
