reserve teams with an afiliation to a first team??

we play under redditch united as a club and are currently there reserve team who are looking to join the mid com the end of this season. but have been told we may have to go into the mid com reserve league as we already have a first team playin non league football!
could anyone shed any light on this and let me know if this is the case as im sure there are other teams out there who already have first teams and reserve teams who may have encountered similar problems.
