NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL: Gary Clipston was left ‘gutted and shell-shocked’ after being sacked as manager of Yaxley last night.

Clipston’s five-and-a-half year reign in the Cuckoos hotseat was ended only weeks after he had overseen another successful fight against relegation from the United Counties League Premier Division.
And he departed from In2itive Park adamant that he never had the opportunity to do the job he really wanted for the club.
Clipston said: “I love the club and I put in every ounce of effort possible on and off the pitch. I’m proud of what I achieved and very disappointed by the decision to sack me.
“I thought the fact we picked up some very good results against decent teams to secure our safety again last season would have been enough to earn me another season, but it obviously wasn’t to be.
“I don’t think I’ve ever had the tools needed to compete in the top half of the table. I’ve always had to work to a bottom-six budget and I feel let down to not be able to continue the job now the club is going into a time where it may have a bigger budget.”
Clipston spent four years as number two to...

Gary’s time with Yaxley Football Club will rightly go down in history as the stuff of legend. One thing that its right to stress is that it doesn’t necessarily mean this is the end of his association with the club as we hear that he is still wanted as part of the Cuckoos set-up.

Clippo started out as a player with the club displacing Jason Wick as left back under the management of Dave Willis.
He was quickly established as a fans favourite. There may not be many Yaxley fans out there, but they know when they see effort, commitment and desire. Gary possessed all three as a player before joining the management team when Paul Humphries was replaced by Jimmy Watson.

Under Watson and Clippo the Cuckoos flourished, and despite their limited facilities and small crowds started to make real inroads in the United Counties League.

With the likes of Michael Frew and Mark Paul scoring goals for fun, backed up by wingers of the calibre of Mark Kingston and Simon Acton, Yaxley were a real force in the local non league scene.

Arguably the finest hour of the Watson/Clipston partnership was the beginning of the end. Kettering Town of the Conference away in the FA Cup saw a one nil lead approaching half time when Paul hit the post.

The home side went on to equalise and in front of over 1000 fans went mad in the second half running out sary winners.
Watsons side never recovered and he was replaced b...

    UCL Saved!!!

    by thecuckoos May 10 2012 07:32 AM

This website has seen strong evidence to suggest that the United Counties League has been saved thanks to a strong campaign against the FA's plan to disband it.

The document itself is under embargo and we dont want to incur the wrath of the Football Association by releasing it (!) but you wont have to google hard to find it.

We will add it to the website as soon as we can.

What it means is that as a group the UCL has come together and put their points across in a sensible and structured manner.

(Well apart from when I was on the radio )

    Good news all round

Here is now unembargoed press release...

    PRESS RELEASE

NATIONAL LEAGUE SYSTEM STEP 5 REVIEW

At a meeting of the Football Association Leagues Committee held today at Wembley Stadium the Final Report from the Step 5/6 Review Group, containing a number of recommendations was considered.

By way of background, the Review Group was established by the Leagues Committee in 2011 to look at a possible reduction in the number of Step 5 divisions from 14 to 12 for the commencement of season 2013/2014. Following an initial meeting with all competitions in July 2011 there followed an extensive consultation period during which all Step 5/6 competitions were met on an individual basis to seek their views...

    End of season rest ...

    by thecuckoos May 9 2012 02:08 PM

Even "The Cuckoos" needs a well earned end of season rest. And that is exactly what we will be taking for the next couple of weeks so expect no updates unless something earth shattering happens at the club.

We will also be continuing work on the Yearbook for a publish date sometime in June.

The other project we are currently working on, the sportswear shop to raise money for the club will also launch around this time (should it be signed off by YFC). You will be able to get anything from trainers to rucksacks, all in aid of the club and making it even better.

If there are any projects we aren't working on that we should, please shout.

UCL Cup final a great success

    by thecuckoos May 8 2012 09:20 AM

Yaxley proved their mettle when it came to putting on a big event as 700 people crammed into In2itive Park for the United Counties league cup final yesterday.

The match between St Ives Town and Kings Lynn town delivered as much as it promised with the Saints taking the cup in what could be classed as an upset.

The Norfolk side too the lead early on but despite forcing a couple of great saves from St Ives' gloveman, couldn't keep up the pressure and were well beaten.

David Cobb levelled from a cross before Conor Washington scored a hat trick, one of which was a Premiership class lob over the pink jerseyed Lynn 'keeper.

The Saints played smartly and took their chances with Gary Setchell's side looking distinctly average at the back.

Most neutrals in the crowd sided with the Saints (even me, a hardcore Yaxley fan...). Their play was a breath of fresh air and despite wind, cold and rain they went through midfield before finding their front men.

The downside was what looked like a hamstring pull for veteran Junior McDougald.

It was a brililant afternoon and a brilliant match.

Congratulations to both teams and what a 2012/2013 season we have ahead of us now with lots of teams looking the real deal.

    Carry on Clippo?

    by thecuckoos May 2 2012 07:59 AM

The Peterborough Evening Telegraph is reporting that Cuckoos Manager Gary Clipston wants to carry on at the In2itive Park helm despite a season riddled with misfortune and turmoil.

You can read the interview here...>>Click here.

It will be interesting to see how the coming weeks pan out. It's vitally important that our next season doesn't proceed in struggle as 2011/2012 has, something very positively alluded to by Clippo in the piece.

Off the park the club continues to get stronger and stronger, something its supporters are keen to see replicated on the pitch.

This has been a tricky season, in the Premiership it might even be called 'transitional'.

Fingers crossed we can do the right things in the closed season and come back even stronger next season.

A late strike from midfield maestro Scott Bogusz was enough to ensure Yaxley finished the UCL Premier Divsion season with a point from the visit of high-flyers Newport Pagnell.

In fact after the previous week there will be those at In2itive Park who will be hoping the season was going to go on for months after the latest influx of new players started to gel and get some results.

There will also be those who have endured a pretty tough time this campaign and will be glad to see the back of circumstances that led us to use 8 goalkeepers and almost 80 different players.

The UCL is a tough and unforgiving league at the best of times so to have the additional challenge of increased expectations from the ground redevelopment and a difficult start because of results, the core of players who have been with us for the duration deserve much respect for keeping the club up.

It was two of those mainstays of Yaxley FC who took the main end of season awards. Ricky Hailstone was the Managers player of the year again with much sought after defender Lewis Stone taking the players player.

Stone came back from suspension for the run-in so its maybe little surprise that results turned around again on his return.

Aside from the players you have to give credit to the Manager who despite some heavy criticism on the internet at times didn't walk away and always remained focused and determined.

Yaxelona will be looking to finish an up and down season with a strong performance against a fantastic Newport Pagnell Town side tomorrow.

The Cuckoos have ultimately stayed up thanks to a brilliant run after Christmas where other parts of the season have seen bad luck and a few hammerings dissolve their chances of getting points.

A season review will follow in the yearbook (when I get round to finishing it !!), so no time for pontificating at the moment.

Pagnell will be a tough nut to crack and anything other than a defeat will be a major result for Yaxley.

    Else where in the UCL...
